IoT solutions for Smart Buildings
Biodry is a Swiss company active since 2009 in the building and sanitation sector, with an innovative and totally bio-compatible device that permanently eliminates capillary rising damp in the walls of private homes, churches, museums, historical buildings and public buildings.
The challenge
Meteca was tasked with implementing an IoT remote monitoring system for efficiently tracking wall humidity levels in a building sanitation company.
Technologies such as Biodry’s, although they effectively sanitise the buildings in which they are installed, often lack the ability to monitor (especially remotely) their efficiency and operating conditions.
The Swiss company was unable to continuously measure the humidity level of the walls being dried, despite an attempt to implement a wired probe system, which, however, did not allow remote control and was complex to install and invasive for the customer.
As a result, Biodry’s technicians were forced to travel frequently to installation sites to monitor the situation live, resulting in high travel costs and an inability to detect any problems in real time.It became necessary to implement an IoT remote monitoring system with wireless technologies.

THE SOLUTIONS
Meteca designed, developed and then produced an IoT kit consisting of nodes and control unit for monitoring the status of dampness in the wall.
Both the control unit and the nodes make use of Briki technology and in particular both have the Briki MBC-WB module with Wi-Fi/BT-BLE technology on board. So just one module for two different applications, saving design time and product costs.
The kit consists of a network of sensors which, suitably inserted in the wall, detect the degree of humidity and via BlueTooth Low Energy (BLE) technology transmit the data to the control unit. The control unit then, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, transmits the processed data to the Cloud platform, reachable everywhere, on which it is possible to analyse and monitor the battery charge level and humidity variations, as well as access historical data.
In addition, it is possible to set alarms that warn of any anomalies or malfunctions in real time, avoiding long downtimes and their associated costs. Furthermore, the control unit also monitors the ambient humidity and temperature, so as to take into account external factors that may affect the humidity variations in the wall being analysed. A new version of the kit is already planned, in which the Control Unit will have 3G/4G connectivity, to allow data to be shared in the cloud even at installation sites without Wi-Fi coverage.

THE RESULTS
Biodry’s enhanced efficiency through Meteca solution
Thus, by remotely monitoring the status of each installation 24 hours a day, it has been possible for Biodry to reduce the travel costs of technicians by 80%, who no longer need to regularly visit the site to check the drying status of walls.
By obtaining a complete and continuous view of performance, this has also made it possible to intervene promptly in the event of anomalies by setting special alarms.
Furthermore, it is possible to give Biodry’s customers dedicated access to a webpage where they can directly check what is happening in their wall, with a significant improvement in user experience. Finally, Biodry gained a competitive advantage over its competitors with the possibility of patenting the complete solution.

This feature allow the remote control of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting and security systems, with the possibility to optimize energy use customizing settings for different hours or days, rooms occupancy etc… This improves efficiency and sustainability with minimal effort.
It helps prevent faults and thus minimise repair costs of building equipment by setting IoT alarms to monitor the operating status. By using real-time data to monitor equipment performance, building managers can identify potential problems before they become critical and take preventive measures.
Physical and Cyber security systems use IoT to make buildings safer and more secure. On the physical side, for example, sensor networks ranging from smoke and flame detectors to air quality sensors, integrated with access control systems, can activate lockdown systems or open secured doors in areas at risk of fire or air pollution. From the virtual side, advanced Building.
